Handgun Training

COVID-19 Update

In light of the COVID-19 physical distancing recommendations, the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting course is available in two-parts. The typical classroom setting is completed on-line through a self-paced environment. The live-fire followup will be scheduled and completed separately. Click here to enroll.

Handgun Training

LNPDSA conducts varying levels of handgun training for residents of eastern North Carolina. We are especially convenient for those who live in New Bern, Craven and contiguous counties (Beaufort, Jones, Lenoir, Pamlico, and Pitt). Safety is paramount, and we stress and reinforce safe handling practices at every level of instruction! Almost all elements of training can be conducted at your convenience, and your location.

If you have any questions, or for more information, contact us here, or call 252.497.2985.

Classroom Event, On-line, and By Appointment

We offer two primary types of training contacts: 1) Scheduled classroom events, and 2) individual. An on-line Basic Pistol course is also available.

Classroom Events

The only training events you see listed on this site (“Upcoming Events”) are our classroom events. These include our Concealed Carry Training classes, as well as our NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting.

For those interested in becoming certified NC concealed carry handgun training instructors, the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is one of the elements necessary toward satisfying North Carolina’s CCHGT instructor requirements.

By Appointment

Individual (appointment based) training, i.e., Concealed Carry Prep, First Steps, LNPDSA Basics of Pistol Shooting, and others, can be seen through our scheduling portal, https://lnpdsa.as.me, here (this is where you are linked to enroll in one of our scheduled classroom events, also).

First Steps (SIMCO)

LNPDSA offers an introduction to the first elements of shooting safely using SIRT (Shot Indicating, Resetting Trigger) and Airsoft pistols that replicate the look, heft, and feel of standard handguns but do not have their intimidating elements. Here, participants learn fundamentals such as attitude and focus that lead to enjoyable shooting experiences, without the flash, bang, and recoil that can intimidate those new to the sport of shooting. The NRA Gun Safety rules are also introduced, here.

This course can be scheduled, here.

Concealed Carry Prep/Handgun FAM 101

This 2-hour, one-on-one course is designed for two people: 1): someone who wants to take a concealed carry class but has never used or fired a handgun, and 2): someone who owns a handgun, but has never used or fired one before owning it. You and a certified pistol instructor sit down together and go over the fundamentals of handgun parts, safe handling, operation, maintenance, and cleaning of handguns. Shooting fundamentals, such as sighting and trigger control, are introduced by way of a laser training device. This course does NOT include a live-fire component. However, live-fire coaching is available, separately. You can schedule this course, here.

Fun time!

Basic pistol instruction introduces participants who are new to handguns to the attitudes necessary for safe firearm handling, the varying types of handguns, their components, as well as their mechanics, operation and maintenance, and includes live-fire proficiency components. Basic instruction is available in several venues.

NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting

The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting course is a course that introduces you to the basic knowledge, skill, and attitude for using and owning both revolvers and semi-automatic pistols safely. Students are introduced to the basic types of actions, revolver and pistol nomenclature. Participants are also taught cleaning and maintenance tools and techniques, as well as shooting fundamentals.

The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is offered through one of two formats:

  • The first format is “blended,” where the traditional classroom instruction is taken on-line, at the student’s own pace. After the on-line component is completed, the live-fire shooting component is conducted at a range, following a review of the on-line material. The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting – Blended Package can be purchased here.
  • The second is entirely instructor-led. Participants attend an eight-hour course that includes both traditional classroom instruction, and live-fire range time. The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting – Instructor Led can be scheduled here.

LNPDSA Basics of Pistol Shooting

Another path is our own Basics of Pistol Shooting course (not an NRA course), which is slightly shorter as it concentrates on the type of handgun in which you are specifically interested (e.g,, revolver or semi-automatic). After either concentration (revolver or semi-automatic), there is a practical, live-fire component. The LNPDSA Basics of Pistol Shooting can be scheduled here.

NC Concealed Carry

For those interested in obtaining a North Carolina Concealed Carry Handgun Permit, LNPDSA also offers approved NC concealed carry handgun training classes for residents of New Bern, Craven county and contiguous counties of eastern North Carolina (Beaufort, Jones, Lenoir, Pamlico and Pitt) that culminates with the Certificate of Completion necessary for the NC concealed carry permit process.

Defensive Pistol Training

Our defensive pistol training is intended for those who have their concealed carry permit and desire additional training in defensive techniques. It begins with a review of the issues involved when using deadly force, and how to interact with law enforcement after a shooting incident, and presentation from a holster scenarios. We then shift from the classroom to the range and assessing your accuracy repeatability at varying distances by hand (two hand, strong hand, weak hand), and then working to improve it by way of increasingly difficult defensive maneuvers, and courses of fire. Also included are “Should I Shoot?” scenarios.

Arranging Training

People desiring handgun training can schedule it here. Note that most training can be conducted at your convenience, and your location, and you can sign-up for a class up to 180 days before the desired course. Reserve your seat, here.

*A course of fire is any combination of stance(s), distance(s), and number of rounds fired.
